Les Sylphides (Bainbridge Dance Center)

Les Sylphides (Bainbridge Dance Center)

July 1, 2018

Originally choreographed in 1907 by Michel Fokine to music by Frédéric Chopin, the one-act ballet Les Sylphides is considered to be the first “ballet blanc” with no distinct narrative. Sergei Diaghilev then commissioned a version for his Ballets Russes that premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 1909 featuring Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, and Vaslav Nijinsky along with new designs by Alexandre Benois. I will reimagine the ballet for students at the Bainbridge Dance Center directed by Christiana Axelsen.
