MJ Markovitz (dancer)

dancer

MJ Markovitz is a freelance dancer based in Brooklyn, NY. He’s performed at sea, across the US, and is a company member and teaching artist with Ballez. MJ is a member of the ballet faculty at Gibney Dance, a substitute teaching artist at The New School and Steps on Broadway, and has worked as a guest lecturer + assistant teaching artist at Rutgers University. He has studied at Columbia University, Hunter College - CUNY, and The Ailey School (Professional Division, Scholarship Program).

MJ hails from the farmlands of New England, his childhood consisting of playing in the mud, eating smiley-face french fries, competition dance, and arguing with adults about being able to carry heavy things. These days, MJ’s into feeling his blood circulating, getting lost in a breath of fresh air, and the color pink.

You can find MJ featured in the AllArts/PBS documentary Travesty, directed by Courtney Powell and produced by Tate Nova/Cousins. Additionally, MJ is featured in the books A Sense of Shifting: Queer Artists Reshaping Dance by Coco Romack and Yael Malka (of which he’s the coverboy), and Turning Pointe: How a New Generation of Dancers is Saving Ballet from Itself by Chloe Angyal. Other mentions include The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Dance Spirit Magazine. And of course, he can be found in the internet’s armpit, on Instagram: @mjmarkovitz.
