Julian Barnett (dancer)
Julian Barnett was born in Tokyo, Japan and transplanted to his native California, where he grew up breakdancing and playing the guitar. Continuing artistic exploration at the Joffrey Ballet and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Julian began influential friendships with Wally Cardona, Larry Keigwin, Lar Lubovitch, Doug Elkins, Doug Varone, performing with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and Johannes Wieland, where he performed alongside Pina Baush’s Tanztheater. Seeking to define his innate curiosity of undiscovered physical art, Julian began seriously choreographing in 2003 and has since shared his interpretations internationally. Select commissions and presentations include: Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Hong Kong Cultural Center (China), Tangénte (Montreal), SEAD (Austria), Teatro Peón (Mexico), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and in New York at Danspace Project, Movement Research, Juilliard, and Dance Theater Workshop, amongst others.
