Strand's Kin (2026/1999)

Strand's Kin is a remount of an original dance made at Sarah Lawrence College in 1999 entitled Sàilean Seven (whose tile incorporated the Scots Gaelic word for “sea strand,” “little inlet,” or “arm of the sea”) set to Claude Debussy's Rêverie. Inspired by legends of Scottish faerie folk known as selkies (mysterious shapeshifters capable of moving between seal and human-like form at will by shedding or donning their magical seal skins), the work, which premièred on April 28th, 2026 in the Bessie Shönberg Theater at Sarah Lawrence College, featured a soundscape by John Yannelli, costumes created in collaboration with Kate Berger, and lighting by Benjamin Demarest.
